Winchester Cathedral & New Forest
Take a journey through one of the last former royal hunting forests of Medieval England. It has seen a wide range of use over the last 1000 years, and inspite of its seemily wild nature it is uttlery a product of human interaction and management, from the Neolithic to today! Take a look at barren heathland, go near to where its thought King William Rufus was killed in 1100 and spot deer, privately owned ponies, cattle and pigs which roam the open heathland and forests. Quite bizzarely as well its possible to take a walk under Coastal Redwoods and to see some Giant Redwoods along the way (all part of the substantial plantation of ornamental trees in the 19th century). Take a look at the marvelous Cathedral in Winchester which is one of the best examples of Romanesque architecutre in the United Kingdom. The nave which was extended during the later Middle Ages in the Gothic Style extends out so far that even with the west end shorter than it was several hudred years ago Winchester Catheral is still the longest Cathedral in England!
The sites in the title of the tour are the places which we most try to get to on the day (subject to last minute closures or other unforseen circumstances). However, we do like to be flexible so feel free to discuss on the day if there are any additional sites you would like to see. Or if you would like to change the itinerary entirely (however you would have to purchase any tickets for sites which were not planned).
